January 10, 2020 Industrial production in November recorded a slight increase of 0.1% on October and a slight decrease of 0.6% on an annual basis. Istat reports this, explaining that it is the "ninth consecutive month" of year-on-year falls. On average in the September-November quarter, production showed a drop of 0.7% compared to the previous quarter, while in the first 9 months of the year it marked a drop of 1.1%. The statistics institute recalls that in November there were 20 working days compared to 21 in November 2018.

The seasonally adjusted monthly index, Istat continues, presents cyclical increases for capital goods (+ 0.8%) and intermediate goods (+ 0.7%), negative changes instead record energy (-2.1%) and consumer goods (-0.2%). On a trend basis and net of calendar effects, in November 2019 there was a moderate growth exclusively for the consumer goods sector (+ 0.8%). On the contrary, a marked decrease marks energy (-3.9%), while intermediate goods (-1.0%) and capital goods (-0.4%) decreased more.

The sectors of economic activity that record the greatest trend increases are the manufacture of computers, electronics and optics products (+ 8.1%), the wood, paper and printing industry (+ 7.0%) and the manufacture of chemical products (+ 2.9%). The largest declines were recorded in the textile, clothing, leather and accessories industries (-5.4%), in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (-5.3%) and in metallurgy and the manufacture of metal products (-4 , 9%).

"In November - Istat comments - there is a slight economic recovery in industrial production, after two months of declines. The recovery, slowed by the sharp drop in the energy sector, is manifested with greater intensity in the sectors linked to the demand for goods, intermediates and equipment on the part of the production system. In trend terms, the decline continues in the index adjusted for calendar effects, which shows a negative sign for the ninth consecutive month ".

Car production + 1.8%
In November 2019, industrial vehicle production recorded a trend growth, corrected by calendar effects, of 1.8%. Istat notes this, underlining that this is the first positive figure since June 2018.

Coldiretti: counter-trend food
In contrast with the general trend, food production flies, showing a 2.1% increase in November compared to the same period of the previous year. This is what emerges from an analysis by Coldiretti on the basis of Istat data on industrial production. In a climate of general concern, this is a positive result for the preparation of stocks for Christmas and New Year's consumption, in which there was an overall expenditure for setting up the tables of around € 5 billion, 11% more than last year, according to the Coldiretti / Ixé survey.

Consumer Union: Country moves back
"The country is falling behind. Yet another drop in production, with dangerous repercussions on GDP. The imperceptible rise on a monthly basis is certainly not enough to compensate for the ninth consecutive decrease on an annual basis or the 1.1% reduction recorded from January to November in trend terms ". This was stated by Massimiliano Dona, president of the National Consumer Union, commenting on the data released today by Istat.

Codacons: weighs deadlock consumption
"Italian industry - for President Carlo Rienzi - suffers from the stalemate in consumption that characterized all 2019, and without a recovery in spending by households the numbers will continue to be disappointing The Government must adopt measures that lead to a change en route, through ad hoc measures to relaunch consumption in Italy ".
