09 January 2020In the aftermath of the failure of the two counterparts in the Libyan crisis to meet in Rome, the prime minister explains the line of the Italian government in an interview with the newspaper "Il Foglio". '' I have seen completely wrong representations on this dossier for too long ", says Giuseppe Conte.

"Italy makes coherence the strong point of its international policy. And as President of the Council I have a duty to ensure full coherence of action also and above all in the field of international politics. We chose from the outset to side for the well-being and prosperity of the Libyan people. In order to achieve this result we have supported, in line with the UN and with the recognition of the entire international community, the government of national agreement chaired by Sarraj. Nevertheless, we have always maintained an inclusive approach , promoting dialogue with all Libyan actors, pursuing this line also on the occasion of the Palermo Conference ''.

The Prime Minister underlines that "the Libyan scenario has always been very complex and, in particular traditionally fragmented into multiple factions, tribes, militias. In order to favor a political solution that would definitively stabilize the country and integrate all the components of Cyrenaica too , we have always tried to cultivate a dialogue with General Haftar. And it is for this reason that yesterday afternoon, as already on other occasions, I met the latter to try to convince him to desist from the military initiative and to embrace a path of negotiation useful to direct Libya towards a definitive pacification ''.

Conte reiterates that the Italian government is working "to find political solutions, in comparison and dialogue" and "as far as possible, to do everything possible to prevent a conflict 'by proxy' from consolidating, with external actors who instead of contributing to the dialogue and a political solution, end up fueling the armed conflict. We are convinced that the only plausible and sustainable solution is to end this war spiral, promoting a negotiating dynamic that puts the interest of the Libyan people in the first place to live in peace and in prosperity.
