Struck with ten stab wounds, particularly in the neck and abdomen, a Belgian bus driver continued his tour for an hour before being hospitalized in serious condition, the Antwerp prosecutor's office reported (north) Friday.

Thursday, shortly after 5 p.m., in Kontich, a driver from the public transport company De Lijn, ahead of his service, took advantage of a cigarette break behind the wheel, leaving the doors of the bus open. It was at this point that a man emerged from the outside and rushed towards him, taking out an object, "probably a knife", to strike him.

An investigation into attempted murder

The attacker fled immediately after his gesture, the driver closed the doors, and "probably in shock", resumed the road and drove to the terminus, in Lier, about fifteen kilometers away. It was only when he returned to the bus depot in Willebroek that he realized that he had been stabbed. His colleagues then warned the emergency services, still according to the prosecution.

In total, the journey between the time of the attack and the return to the depot lasted an hour, according to Belgian media. The Antwerp prosecution has opened an investigation into attempted murder. The 58-year-old bus driver had potentially "fatal" injuries: "ten stab wounds in the abdominal region, near the neck, in the upper part of the right leg and in the arms".
