This will be a first in Lyon. The city will pilot for three years an experience: banning cigarettes in a public park. Until then, only children's play areas were prohibited for smokers, who nevertheless had the possibility of hobbling in the alleys or under the trees of municipal green spaces.

The Zenith park, located in the 3rd arrondissement, was chosen since a “health impact” study has been carried out there for some time. The ban on smoking is also one of the recommendations from this study.

However, the municipal council will have to validate the idea. It will be submitted to him on January 27. Which should be a formality.

A label after three years

“Zenith Park is located in the middle of a campus of six training establishments welcoming nearly 6,400 students. If the cigarette butt represents a significant source of pollution for soil and water, the situation of the park at the heart of a campus could become a lever for raising awareness against smoking, "explains city of Lyon, which will also be deployed around the site. “EcoMegot” ashtrays, intended for recycling cigarette butts. As a reminder, a single pollutes 500 liters of water and contains more than 200 chemical compounds.

The park in question will thus be able at the end of the 3-year test, to be labeled "tobacco-free space".
