Some 292 turtles have been found dead in recent days on the beaches of the Mexican state of Oaxaca (south), victims of the "red tide", micro-algae on the rise, notably due to climate change, have environmental authorities said Thursday. This red tide, which promotes the development of small fish, salps, toxic to turtles, arrived on the coast of Oaxaca on December 25, according to a statement from the Mexican environmental protection authority.

A total of 292 Chelonia agassizi turtles, or green turtles, were found dead poisoned by the ingestion of these salps, which paralyze them, said this authority. The red tide manifests itself by an extraordinary accumulation of these micro-algae where these small fish live, toxic to several marine species, including green turtles.
