At major events abroad where Swedes have perished, the National Operational Department, NOA, can. Activate the so-called ID Commission, which takes over responsibility for identifying the deceased from the police. Then it is the Disaster Victim Identification team, DVI, which is responsible for the collection and matching of various ID data.

- At the moment we are collecting matching material from relatives and their homes here in Sweden to have a reference material to compare with finds on site, says Manne Jönsson.

Passenger list not enough

According to Manne Jönsson, the identification work is not so easy that you can only look at the passenger list.

- It does not meet the quality required, there may be different information on the passenger list that must be checked. Different people have traveled on different types of documents.

Some of the passengers may also have dual citizenship, which may mean that they are not listed as Swedes on the passenger list.

- We want to be sure that these are the right people, and it is difficult to say exactly how long the identification work will take, says Manne Jönsson.

Ready to send personnel to Iran

At present, Iran has not asked Sweden to send staff to assist with the identification work, which is common in these types of events. According to Manne Jönsson, DVI is ready to send staff, but they also have to take extra measures because of the tense situation in Iran.

- Iran has other types of difficulties with other countries right now, so before we send down Swedish personnel, security checks will be done and guarantees will be obtained for personnel who will be sent there.
