Auckland (AP) - defending champions Julia Görges and Laura Siegemund have successfully started the new season with victories at the women's tennis tournament in Auckland.

Görges prevailed in the New Zealand metropolis with 6: 1, 7: 6 (7: 4) against qualifier Greet Minnen from Belgium. The opponent in the round of 16 of the well-known tournament is the Swiss Jil Teichmann.

Görges has triumphed at the $ 252,000 event in the past two years and could meet the former world number one Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark in the quarter-finals.

Siegemund won 6-2, 6-2 against Catherine McNally. The American moved up shortly for the Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck into the main field. Siegemund meets US teenager Coco Gauff in a delightful round of 16 final at the hard court tournament.

The long-standing world ranking first Serena Williams also had a clear success at the start. In her first match since the US Open four months ago, the 38-year-old American won 6: 3, 6: 2 against the Italian Camila Giorgi.
