The head of the opposition in Venezuela, Juan Guaidò, has sworn anew as interim president of the country after taking on the role of president of the National Assembly, the Parliament: "In the name of those who have no voice, of mothers who cry for their children, struggling teachers, nurses, students, political prisoners, in the name of Venezuela, swear to fulfill the duties of president in charge and find solutions to the crisis, "said Guaidò.

Guaido entered the hemicycle of the National Assembly after moments of high tension in which military and police forces attempted to prevent his entry into the Legislative Palace. After entering the classroom, Guaido and some deputies sang the national anthem.

Already on Sunday, dozens of agents of the national guard blocked the entry into Parliament of a group of opposition deputies led by Guaido. The latter, self-proclaimed president of the country last year in open challenge to the head of state Nicolas Maduro, over the past year has been president of the National Assembly and was expected to be re-elected for this position. But on Sunday, Luis Parra, a former ally of the opposition, declared himself president of Parliament, saying he had obtained the vote of 81 deputies. A count rejected by the opposition, which claims that 100 deputies, i.e. the majority, voted for Guaidò in a session of Parliament held in the seat of a Venezuelan newspaper

Mike Pompeo said that at a press conference, he congratulated the Venezuelan opposition leader for his "legitimate reelection" as president of the National Assembly. An election that took place outside the Parliament building, while Luis Parra was elected in the courtroom with the votes of the opposition who moved away from Guaidò and the deputies close to Nicolas Maduro.

The US secretary of state stressed that the Trump administration will continue to defend anyone who supports democracy in Venezuela against the "intimidation campaign" promoted by the Maduro regime.
