French, British, Italian and German foreign ministers made an unexpected trip to Brussels on Tuesday. On the menu for their extraordinary meeting was the situation in Iraq, but they spoke at length about the situation in Libya.

With our correspondent in Brussels , Pierre Benazet

Europeans demand an immediate ceasefire in and around Tripoli and say there can be no military solution. In essence: a bogged down conflict is the suffering of the population, the risk of a partition of Libya, the worsening of regional instability and the terrorist threat.

The Europeans have also drawn the same alarm signal as the UN special envoy: for them external interference is fueling the conflict. And the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell made it clear: it is Turkish military intervention that is at stake. A blunt warning to Turkey, whose action is considered by Europeans to be against the interests of Libya and those of the EU.

The meeting was intended to prepare for the extraordinary meeting of foreign ministers on Friday in Brussels. And among the priorities of Europeans is the application of the arms embargo and therefore the resumption of maritime patrols of the military operation Sophia, which currently has no ships .
