A quake of magnitude 5.8 on the Richter scale shook the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico on Monday, causing structural damage, small landslides and power outages although there are no reports of victims, according to the United States Seismological Institute (USGS) .

According to the BBC, a tourist natural rock formation, known as Punta Ventana, collapsed after the strong earthquake. The Meteorological Laboratory of the University of Puerto Rico published a photo in its account of how this tourist spot disappeared.

"Playa Ventana has collapsed. Today our icon rests in everyone's memory," said Glidden López, a member of the press department of the town hall of Guayanilla, on Facebook. Its mayor, Nelson Torres Yordán, also confirmed the loss.

The earthquake was recorded at 06:32 local time south of Guayanilla, a municipality south of the island, and was perceived in much of this US territory in the Caribbean, including the capital San Juan.

The tremor caused the interruption of the electrical system affecting some 250,000 subscribers of the Electric Power Authority , a national company in charge of electricity.

Residents posted photos on social networks that show fallen houses after the pillars that held them high, cracked walls, cars trapped under demolished homes and minor landslides.

Since December 28, telluric movements have been recorded constantly in the area. The first was 4.7. This Monday has been the strongest at the moment.

No tsunami warning was issued for Puerto Rico or the neighboring US Virgin Islands.

At least 8 aftershocks were recorded during the morning, including one that reached a magnitude of 5.0.
