A man was shot dead in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on Sunday by police. Armed with a knife, he attempted to attack the police.

The man, who resided in that city, struck a patrol vehicle with an object and then sought to attack "with a raised object" police officers who were near the vehicle, a spokesman for AFP told AFP the police. Police found that the assailant was holding a knife behind his back, he added.

Multiple warnings

Despite warnings from law enforcement, the man refused to stop his attack, and a 23-year-old policeman opened fire, killing him. Asked about reports that the man shouted "Allah Akbar" ("God is great") during the attack, the spokesman only spoke of "rumors".

Germany is on high alert following several Islamist attacks, the deadliest of which killed 12 people in 2016 when a Tunisian crashed into a truck at a Christmas market in Berlin. The attack had been claimed by Daesh.
