He was arrested by the anti-crime brigade in the city center of Rennes on December 29. His "hunting" attitude, according to an investigator, aroused the suspicions of the police, who quickly identified him. Actively wanted, a man of Afghan origin suspected of at least two rapes was placed in police custody at the end of December and placed in pre-trial detention, the Rennes prosecutor's office said. This man, born in 1990, is said to be in two cases of rape committed in the Breton capital and one potentially in Brest (Finistère).

The police had collected the suspect's DNA after the assault on a woman committed on November 24 on the towpath behind the Tour des Horizons, in Rennes. The victim was first beaten before being raped in the middle of the night. On December 15, three weeks later, a woman in her 40s was victimized in the same place. The latter managed to give a precise description of his attacker and allowed the investigators to refine the portrait of the suspect.

Identified by its DNA

The DNA collected allowed the investigators to establish a clear link between the two cases. And also revealed a potential third victim, who had complained about a rape committed in May in Brest. Unknown to police files, the trace did not identify the author, until his arrest.

According to a police source, the DNA collected in Rennes is that of the man placed in police custody at the end of December. The 29-year-old Afghan national arrived in France five years ago. First established in the Paris region, he then headed for Brest before joining Rennes recently. Investigators are investigating whether other potential victims are to be reported. Judicial information has been opened.
