Fredrik Arvidsson is Group Manager at the police in Halmstad and Laholm. He himself has been out on the roads and stopped people during Christmas and New Year's days. In 2019, just under 300 suspected drunk drivers were stopped by the police in both municipalities. This is slightly less than the previous year, when the number was 360. But during November and December, more people stopped last year compared to the same period in 2018, something that Fredrik Arvidsson reacted to.

Overestimate their ability

- My view is also that several of the people we have met are indifferent to being behind the wheel when you are under the influence of alcohol and drugs. For example, one person thought it had been several hours since he had been drinking and that the alcohol should therefore reasonably have gone out of the body. Other chances and consider themselves to be better drivers than they really are, he tells SVT News Halland.

More use drugs

The average age of the suspects is 37 years. Fredrik Arvidsson believes that more men than women who drive are affected. Most of the drunk drivers who were caught last year were under the influence of drugs.

- It is not unusual for these drivers to be arrested for similar crimes several times before, and they are also reported for serious illegal driving. This is when they previously got rid of their driver's license in the case of previous driving offenses, says Fredrik Arvidsson.
