Al-Jazeera correspondent in Baghdad said that four Katyusha rockets landed late on Sunday evening on the Green Zone, which includes the headquarters of the Iraqi government and parliament and a number of Arab and Western embassies, including the American embassy, while a US official confirmed that his country monitored a missile alert in Iran.

The correspondent reported that two of the rockets landed close to the American embassy, while a missile landed on a house in the vicinity of the Green Zone, and wounded civilians.

This attack comes one day after a similar attack in which the Green Zone was targeted with Katyusha rockets, some of which landed inside the Green Zone.

On the other hand, Reuters quoted a US official as saying that his country has monitored that the Iranian missile power is on high alert in all parts of the country, adding that it is not clear whether the state of alert is defensive in nature or not.

The official, who asked not to be named, did not provide other details, and did not say whether the Iranian missiles were aimed at specific targets.

For his part, US President Donald Trump renewed his threat to respond "perhaps in a disproportionate way" if Iran attacked any American individual or target.

Trump, in a tweet on Twitter, said his media posts would serve as a notification to Congress.

This is the third warning Trump has issued in the past 24 hours to Iran against targeting any American place or person.

Trump had threatened on Saturday to bomb 52 Iranian targets if it targeted any U.S. sites, in response to statements by Iranian officials in retaliation for the killing of Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani.

On the other hand, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo vowed to target what he called the decision-makers in Iran.

In an interview with the American network "NBC", Pompeo defended the American military strike that led to Soleimani's death, stressing that Washington would respond decisively and forcefully to any retaliatory strikes by Iran.

It is noteworthy that the commander of the Iranian Quds Force Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, deputy head of the Popular Mobilization Authority, were killed at dawn Friday during an American air strike in the vicinity of the international airport in the capital Baghdad, which sparked widespread anger in Iraq and Iran, and mutual threats between Tehran to retaliate and Washington to respond to any step.
