Six German youths were killed when they left a nightclub, and 11 people were injured, after they were run over by a driver who was apparently "drunk" in northern Italy, near the border with Austria.

The accident took place in the small village of Lotago in the Alto Adige region, which is popular with ski enthusiasts in winter and a large number of tourists in the summer as well. More than 150 paramedics rushed to the area following the accident.

Six youths were killed in the accident, while 11 others were injured, two of them from the region. Two people were seriously injured in Innsbruck Hospital in Austria, while the other wounded were treated in Brunico, Bolzano and Brisasone hospitals.

The Italian "Ray News 24" channel said that the car driver was 28 years old, and he was a resident of the region. "The level of alcohol in his blood was very high," and the man was arrested while he was in a local hospital under police escort.
