The death of Qassem Soleimani risks provoking a response from Tehran. Several cities in the United States are on alert after the raid in Baghdad against the Iranian general. But Donald Trump assures him, this action was not intended to conflict with Iran; on the contrary, the american president argues that this operation saved lives. According to the State Department, actions were planned in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.

Since his accession to the White House, Donald Trump has never ceased to repeat it: his goal is to bring the American troops deployed abroad, to disengage from conflicts in the Middle East. This statement by the president seems to contradict his policy.

The exit from the nuclear deal and its campaign of maximum pressure on Iran only increased tensions with Tehran. And the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani is likely to provoke reprisals from Iran and lead to a military escalation.

The Americans are aware of this: they send 3,000 additional soldiers to Kuwait to deal with any eventuality. They are in addition to a reinforcement of 750 men announced earlier this week.

" We acted to stop the war, " said Donald Trump during a solemn intervention in the aftermath of the raid in Baghdad. The president repeated it in the evening in front of his admirers in Miami: he acts to save lives and his administration remains determined to establish peace and stability around the world.

Whatever the facts: the bottom line for Donald Trump is to maintain the trust of his constituents. They certainly want the Americans to disengage from the international scene, but hail the President's ability to act firmly when their interests are threatened.

Soleimani was planning an imminent and sinister attack on American diplomats and personnel, but we caught him and executed him. For the past 20 years, Soleimani has carried out terrorist actions to destabilize the Middle East. What the United States did yesterday should have been done a long time ago. Many lives would have been saved. We acted last night to stop a war, we did not act to start a war. I have deep respect for the Iranian people, we are not seeking regime change. But the aggressions of the Iranian regime in the region, in particular the use of militiamen combatants to destabilize its neighbors must stop and must stop now. The United States has by far the best army in the world. If Americans are threatened anywhere, we have already identified targets, and I am ready to take whatever action is necessary. And this is especially for Iran.
