Two Middle East airlines suspended flights to Baghdad on Friday after the US assassinated a powerful Iranian general near the Iraqi capital's international airport.

The city of Nadjaf also concerned

The Jordanian company Royal Jordanian said in a press release that it "has decided to suspend flights between Amman and Baghdad (...) until further notice, in the light of the security situation in Baghdad and its airport". Flights to other Iraqi cities are maintained. Royal Jordanian operated 18 weekly flights between Amman and Baghdad. Bahrain's national carrier, Gulf Air, has also announced the suspension until further notice of its flights to Baghdad but also to the holy city of Nadjaf "for security reasons".

Other airlines said they were monitoring the situation in Iraq before making a decision. A spokesperson for Qatar Airways, for example, said that flights to Baghdad were being maintained for the time being, but would be canceled if "escalated".
