Sebastian Kurtz returned to power in Austria yesterday, to become at the age of 33 years the youngest president in the world to assume his duties, ahead of Finnish Sana Maran (34 years), who became prime minister in December.

Like Kurtz and Maran, there are several leaders currently in the world in their thirties or at that age when they assumed their duties:

■■ Ukraine:

Legal expert Oleksey Goncharok was appointed prime minister in August, at the age of 35, by President Volodymyr Zelinsky, 41.

■■ El Salvador:

President Najib Abukailah took office in June at the age of 37.

Andorra:

Xavier Espoo Zamora took office in May at the age of 39.

Costa Rica:

President Carlos Alvarado was elected at the age of 38 in 2018.

■■ New Zealand:

Jacinda Ardern became prime minister when she was 37 in 2017.

Ireland:

Leo Faradkar became, at the age of 38 in 2017, the youngest Prime Minister of the Republic of Ireland.

France:

Emmanuel Macron was elected president in May 2017, to become 39 years old, the youngest of the 25 French presidents.

■■ Estonia:

At the age of 38, the centrist Uri Ratas became prime minister in November 2016. He took over from another young man, Tave Roevas, who became prime minister at 34 in 2014.

■■ Malta:

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat came to power in 2013, at the age of 39.

Beyond democracies, leaders like North Korean Kim Jong Un are 35 years old.

In Bhutan, King Jigmeh Khesar Namjil Wangshak came to power at the age of 26 in 2006, and today he is 39.
