In the study, young, healthy men have been given a sugary diet and the study can provide new insights on the function of sperm. In the long term, it is hoped that it will be able to contribute to new diagnostics to measure sperm quality.

- We see that the diet affects how mobile the sperm are and that it is also linked to changes in specific molecules in the sperm. In our study, these are rapid effects that are noticed after one to two weeks, says university lecturer Anita Öst.

15 younger, normal-weight, non-smokers were allowed to follow a diet where they were provided with everything they would eat for two weeks. The diet was based on a health diet that followed the Nordic nutritional recommendations. In the second week, sugar was added, corresponding to about 3.5 liters of soda.
