The spokesman for the Algerian presidency announced, Thursday, January 2, the composition of the first government of the new head of state, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The new team consists of 39 members. The three prime ministers cited, Sabri Boukadoum for Foreign Affairs, Kamel Beldjoud for the Interior and Belkacem Zeghmati for Justice, were in the previous government of Noureddine Bedoui appointed in March by Abdelaziz Bouteflika, a few days before his resignation under pressure from an unprecedented protest movement.

National television also gives the names of Abderrahmane Raouia to the Finance portfolio and Mohamed Arkab to that of Energy.

Since last February, Algeria has been rocked by a vast protest movement against the ruling elite. Hundreds of thousands of people participated in the demonstrations, first daily and then weekly, which resulted in the resignation of Abdelaziz Bouteflika in April.

Elected last month with 58% of the vote but a turnout not exceeding 40% according to official figures, Abdelmadjid Tebboune became president after an election snubbed by the street.

When sworn in two weeks ago, he pledged to start consultations quickly to draft a new constitution, fight corruption and diversify the economy.
