The collapse of a burning factory on Thursday in New Delhi, India, left twelve injured, mostly firefighters, authorities said, adding that it was the third major fire in less than one month in the Indian capital.

An emergency services spokesperson said someone was stranded in the rubble of the battery factory seven hours after the alert was launched in the early morning.

Toxic smoke

More than 150 firefighters were mobilized on the fire that caused flames over 10 meters high Thursday early in the morning at a factory in the district of Peeragarhi in Delhi. An explosion at the rear of the building collapsed the structure, giving off toxic smoke. India is frequently affected by fires of this kind, due in particular to a lack of compliance with safety standards.

The emergency services of the Indian megalopolis have been placed on high alert after several such disasters in recent weeks. On December 9, 43 people died in a factory fire, one of the deadliest in recent decades in the Indian capital. Nine more people died in another disaster later.
