An Antonov 12 military cargo plane crashed shortly after take-off from Al-Geneina airport, the capital of West Darfur State, on its way to Khartoum, according to a military source confirmed to France Press.

The source could not determine whether the accident resulted in casualties.

The source said, in a call from Al-Geneina city, that the plane emptied some aid intended for those affected by the clashes that broke out Sunday in the region between gunmen belonging to Arab and African tribes.

The Sudanese armed forces spokesman, Brigadier Amer Muhammad Al-Hassan, confirmed to AFP on Thursday evening that the plane had crashed, adding, "We are gathering information now."

According to Sudanese media, the crash coincided with a visit by Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdouk to the troubled region.

It reported that three judges and a WFP staff member were on board, in addition to its staff.

On Thursday, the Sudanese Red Crescent Society announced that it had transported 48 bodies of the victims of the tribal clashes that broke out on the evening of December 29 in El Geneina to the city hospital morgue.

241 people were injured, 19 of them in a state of injury, who were transferred to Khartoum, according to the Sudanese Red Crescent statement.

According to Sudanese media, clashes erupted in the city on Sunday evening, after a quarrel between two people. Both weapons continued, and a number of houses were burned in Kording refugee camp due to the conflict in the region.
