Croatia takes over from today the rotating presidency of the European Union. It is the first time for this country which joined the EU in 2013. It will have several files to manage: Brexit, European budget. Domestically, the country will also have to elect its president.

From our correspondent in Brussels , Laxmi Lota

Croats take over the presidency of the EU Council without knowing the name of their own president. The second round of the presidential election will take place on Sunday January 5.

The country has well prepared for its European role over the next six months, according to several officials in Brussels. Croatia begins this presidency in a difficult context: it will be necessary to manage the exit of the United Kingdom from the Union , but also the program of the 100 days of the president of the Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen , or the disappointments of the countries of Balkans, candidates for integration and rejected recently.

"Strong Europe" in "a world of challenges"

The slogan chosen by Croatia for the next six months does not hide the difficulties of this agenda: " A strong Europe in a world of challenges ".

The Croatian Presidency will also be faced with negotiations on the European multiannual budget 2021-2027. It will be a question of defining what budgets will be available, in particular for agricultural policy.

Complex negotiations are in sight, therefore, before a German presidency on July 1.
