Göran Karlsson became a member of the Swedish Lifeguard Society in 1975 after completing his swimming teacher training and is happy with zero in the drowning statistics.

- We care for children to learn to swim. That they should learn ice sweat, to pay attention. I hope the annual campaigns we do contribute to this zero statistic.

As yet, no public statistics have been finalized, but Göran Karlsson says that the association has constant monitoring of the reports. Last year, two people were killed in drowning in Värmland. The statistics do not include suicide.

"Warm in the heart"

The explanation for the zero statistics is less about a cold summer and more about people paying attention to others in need, says Göran Karlsson.

- Like the three guys who pulled up an 84-year-old man from the river in Karlstad this summer. They have received awards for their efforts. And I think not least of Lilly who was available and and attentively rescued a boy from the water at Orrleken. I get warm in my heart when I think we care about each other.

Storm clouds

Although the association's chairman is happy about the drowning-free year, there is still a concern that the statistics may fall back.

- I think of all the bathing houses and swimming pools that close down, as in, say, Filipstad. I hope that the politicians in the municipalities in Värmland provide resources to maintain the statistics and maintain swimming schools in the municipalities, says Göran Karlsson.
