Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called on the international community to confront what he described as American hegemony, and his call comes days after Iran announced naval defense understandings with both China and Russia in parallel with joint naval exercises in the northern Indian Ocean.

During talks today Tuesday in Beijing with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi and addressed several issues, including the Iranian nuclear file, Zarif called for confronting unilateralism and supporting pluralism, and criticized US sanctions on his country.

The Iranian minister commended the role of China in supporting international issues, and praised the bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

It is noteworthy that this is Zarif's third visit to China this year.

For his part, Wang said the two sides should maintain regular contact and always stand against what he described as hegemony.

The Iranian and Chinese ministers meet following Zarif's visit to Moscow, during which he held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

After this meeting, Lavrov criticized what he described as American provocations toward Iran, and said that Washington violated international rules on the nuclear agreement that Iran concluded in the summer of 2015 with major powers, and from which the United States withdrew in the spring of 2018.
