The ban on single-use plastic is slowly becoming reality in France. The decree, published on Friday, December 27, defines precisely what a "single-use plastic product" is, in particular the fact that it is "not designed, created or put on the market to be reused for an identical use. to the one it was designed for ". It also specifies certain categories of products.

Products banned on January 1, 2020 will benefit from a six-month inventory run-off period from this date, provided that they were manufactured or imported before.

The exemption granted to compostable products containing at least 50% biobased material is limited to July 3, 2021, according to the decree.

The covers used in penitentiary establishments, health establishments and in air, rail and maritime transport benefit from a period until July 3, 2021.

The ban on single-use plastics in 2020 and 2021 will affect cups and glasses, disposable kitchen plates as well as cutlery, straws, and mixing sticks for drinks.

For broader action against plastic, Parliament is still discussing in detail a law against waste and for a circular economy. The text has already been discussed and adopted at first reading in the National Assembly.

The text enshrines in law the objective of 100% recycled plastic by January 1, 2025, and aims to ban the marketing of single-use plastic packaging by 2040.
