The caretaker Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi called the protesters to withdraw immediately, and stressed in a statement that "any aggression or harassment of foreign embassies and representations is an act that the security forces will strictly prohibit and the law will punish him with the most severe penalties."

Reuters news agency quoted officials of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry confirming the evacuation of the American ambassador and other employees of the embassy in Baghdad for security reasons.

The Al-Jazeera correspondent reported that the defense and interior ministers arrived at the embassy headquarters to inspect it, while thousands of protesters continue to protest in the vicinity of the embassy, ​​vowing to set up tents to sit open in front of the embassy until they close and remove the American forces.

"We are following the instructions of the Iraqi prime minister," he said, adding that Abdul-Mahdi refused to storm the American embassy, ​​but it was difficult to prevent the protesters.

A spokesman for the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades, Muhammad Muhyi, said that the "popular mass stand" in front of the American embassy is trying to deliver a message to the Americans that they are not wanted by the presence of their military and security forces in Iraq.

In a previous interview with Al-Jazeera, Mohy described the American embassy in Baghdad as a den of espionage and sabotage activities hostile to the Iraqi people, as he put it.

As for the leader of the Iraqi League of the Righteous League, Qais Khazali, he said in front of the American embassy that the embassy is leading "plans and projects of conspiracy against Iraq and violating its sovereignty," considering that the recent "blatant assault" will not go unnoticed.

Khazali added, "10 years have passed since the agreement to evacuate American forces from Iraq, but this time we will tell you that we exist."

In turn, the Iraqi counterterrorism agency said in a statement, "We were not charged with protecting the American embassy and our mission is specific outside Baghdad," while the Ministry of Defense confirmed that the government is keen to protect foreign missions.
