The legal services of the Spanish state, the Abogacia del Estado, have asked the Supreme Court to recognize the status of MEP in Oriol Junqueras, as recently ruled by European justice. This Catalan separatist leader had been sentenced to 13 years in prison for sedition. However, he could now appear in Brussels.

A dramatic change in the Oriol Junqueras case. This Catalan separatist leader has been imprisoned for two years and recently sentenced to 13 years in prison and 13 other years of ineligibility for sedition against the Spanish state. The European Court of Justice had ruled on December 19 that this leader should benefit from his status as an European parliamentarian since his election as MEP in June 2019.

However, the legal services of the Spanish State, against all expectations, go in the same direction. Very concretely, they authorize Oriol Junqueras to leave his prison in Catalonia and to go to Strasbourg to obtain the documents accrediting his condition as a MEP.

In Madrid, the "Spanish" camp opposed to Catalan independence is enraged and thinks it is a maneuver to promote the formation of a socialist government with the support of Podemos and the separatists.

In the secessionist camp, we rub our hands, because one of their leaders is going to leave prison when we thought he was imprisoned for a long time.

The only big unknown, which will depend on the Supreme Court: will Oriol Junqueras be able to benefit from parliamentary immunity or not? If this were the case, the Catalan separatists would win a new battle.
