For bullied dogs and other animals, New Year's Eve can be a nightmare. This has resulted in many pet owners resorting to airport hotels because there are fireworks bans around airports.

"It's by far the most popular day of the year with us," says Jonas Svensson, hotel manager at Sturup airport hotel outside Malmö.

During the coming New Year's night, about 100 dogs and 140 people will be staying at the hotel - which has been fully booked for a long time, according to the hotel manager.

"Most enjoyable day of the year"

At Clarion hotel Arlanda airport outside Stockholm, 380 dogs will be checked in on New Year's Eve, which is a record number. The hotel at Arlanda was early in offering animal rooms during the New Year.

- Arlanda started with this and then I also tested, it went amazingly well. It's the fifth year now and it's the most fun day of the whole year. It will be a fantastic atmosphere, not only with the dogs but with all people who have the same interest, says Jonas Svensson.

Häringe Castle south of Stockholm is also popular with dog owners who want fireworks free in conjunction with the New Year. During the New Year's Eve, about 60 dogs will sleep over at the hotel.

New fireworks rules

Since June 1 this year, new rules apply when it comes to rockets with joysticks. Education and permits from the municipality are now required to fire these rockets.

According to the Swedish Agency for Social Protection and Emergency Preparedness (MSB), approximately 100 people are so severely injured each year by fireworks that they need to seek medical attention. The new rules are an accident prevention measure, according to the authority.
