Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked his American counterpart, Donald Trump, for information provided to Russia through intelligence channels and which contributed to thwarting a terrorist attack.

A statement issued by the Kremlin's media office said that Putin on Sunday telephoned Trump.

The statement added that Putin thanked Trump for the information provided to Moscow.

He pointed out that the two sides discussed during the contact a group of issues of common concern, and stressed the continuation of cooperation in the field of combating terrorism.

After the phone conversation between Putin and Trump, the Russian Federal Security Service announced the arrest of two citizens who were planning a terrorist attack in the city of Saint Petersburg during New Year's celebrations.

In the statement, it was confirmed that information about the terrorist attack in Saint Petersburg was conveyed to Russia through American intelligence channels.

Despite their differences over several international files, Moscow and Washington are showing systematic cooperation to combat terrorism.
