• A machete attack leaves five wounded in the celebration of the Hanukkah in a suburb of New York
  • USA: Trump launches the offensive against his 'impeachment'

Tensions between the different communities that make up US society continue to rise. The last case has been the attack on an ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in the town of Monsey, about 60 miles from downtown New York, this Sunday, which has left five wounded by a knife, one of them in critical condition . This is the ninth attack against Jews in the state of New York in a week. The governor of the state of New York, Democrat Andrew Cuomo, has described the action as an "act of terrorism . " The proliferation of anti-Jewish attacks has led New York City authorities to strengthen the police presence in the neighborhoods where that community lives.

The attack has had all the characteristics of a planned action specifically against a community . It occurred at 10 p.m. local time (four in the morning in Spanish peninsular time), when a 37-year-old African American named Thomas Grafton entered the residence of Rabbi Chaim Rottenberg armed with a machete "the size of a stick broom " and attacked without warning the people gathered there celebrating the Hebrew holiday of Hanuka. After injuring five individuals - one of whom is in critical condition - he left and tried to enter the adjacent synagogue, which had the door closed. Grafton was arrested hours later in Manhattan.

The alleged attack is not an isolated case. Nor is it the worst attack against the Jewish community in recent weeks in the New York region. That unfortunate title belongs to the criminal action carried out by two other African-Americans - David Nathaniel Anderson and his girlfriend, Francine Graham - opened fire on a kosher food store (that is, acceptable according to the rules of Judaism) in Jersey City City, which, although in the state of New Jersey, is literally next to New York.

Anderson and Graham murdered the owner, an employee, and a customer of the establishment, before being killed by the police. Just before carrying out the action, they had killed an agent who had apparently had a chance encounter with them . A few days before they had killed a driver of an Uber. Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop declared the attack "hate crime" , a definition that applies to crimes that are carried out against a person by identity - religious, racial, national, sexual, or otherwise - this.

Grafton, Anderson's, or Graham's mobiles are unknown. But what seems clear is that they acted against the Jewish community intentionally and with the aim of causing the greatest possible number of deaths. In the case of the murderers of Jersey City, it is known that they were members of the racist group Black Israel Hebrews . That is a religious and political community that has an absolutely crazy theology, and in which there are several factions that claim that members of that race are superior beings and that they also advocate violence against whites and, especially, Jews. . Other groups, such as the Nation of Islam founded by the arch-famous militant Malcolm X and led today by Louis Farrakhan have also sometimes played the card of anti-Semitism and black superiority.

But what all these incidents reveal is the division, also racial, of the society of the United States. Not a day goes by without news about racial, religious or ethnic tensions in the country. The most serious cases are similar to yesterday's stabbing - or another, on November 20, also in Monsey, of an Orthodox Jew who went to the synagogue - but incidents occur everywhere. In Iowa, William Stark refused to remove the Nazi flags that surround his house , which, above it, is next to a primary school until, two weeks ago, unidentified assailants destroyed them. Even in the traditional American football game between the Navy and the Army, held two weeks ago, controversy broke out when several cadets appeared making the sign of 'okay' inverted, which is a white racist symbol.
