A military source said that a number of deaths and injuries were reported in an air strike launched by the American army today, Sunday, on the headquarters of the Iraqi Hezbollah in Anbar province, west of the country.

The US military announced that it had targeted five bases in Iraq and Syria of the "pro-Iranian" Hezbollah, two days after an American was killed in a missile attack on a military base in Kirkuk.

Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said the strikes were carried out "in response to repeated attacks by the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades on bases comprising" American forces, "stressing" that they will weaken the party's capabilities to launch future attacks on coalition forces.

It is noteworthy that an American contractor was killed Friday in a missile attack on an Iraqi military base near the city of Kirkuk.

Earlier, a US official said that Washington was investigating the possibility of Hezbollah's brigades involved in the attack.

Tensions are running high between the United States and Iran, two allies of Baghdad, amid fears that Iraq will turn into a battleground between the two countries.

In recent weeks, missile attacks have repeatedly targeted military bases hosting American soldiers and diplomats in Iraq.

American officials point fingers at Iran through its proxies from the Iraqi Shiite factions, in particular the Iraqi Hezbollah Brigades, which Iran denies.

The United States recently threatened a decisive response if Iran or its proxies attacked American forces or its allies in the region.
