The Peruvian Minister of Justice is in the hot seat after a comment deemed insensitive, even indolent, following a new feminicide in Lima. Despite her apologies, Ana Teresa Revilla was disowned by President Martin Vizcarra.

Being in “Christmas” mode did not succeed for the Peruvian Minister of Justice, who learned the hard way that we are ministers seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

When journalists asked her after Christmas mass for a reaction to a new case of femicide , Ana Teresa Revilla only smiled and said that she would not answer because she was still in a festive state of mind.

As criticism multiplied, the Minister of Justice first replied that it had not been understood, before apologizing.

She justified her apparently insensitive reaction by her lack of political experience and the surprise of being questioned at the end of the mass.

Police inaction at the time of the tragedy

It is not sure that this is enough, because Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra immediately disavowed it by speaking of unacceptable declarations.

Ana Teresa Revilla's reaction is all the more surprising given that the femicide of Jessica Tejeda and three of her four children shocked the whole country.

First because this 34-year-old woman is the 164th victim of feminicide in Peru this year, but also because the police took more than an hour to intervene despite the calls of the neighbors, when the police station was only '200 meters from the scene of the tragedy.

The young woman was found dead on December 22, after being beaten by her ex-spouse.

In Peru, the number of feminicides continues to increase. With 164 cases since the start of the year, 2019 was a deadlier year than 2018.
