The commander of the Afghan "Fatimiyoun" brigade fighting alongside the Syrian regime died under the umbrella of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, while the Syrian opposition factions managed on Saturday to enter the town of Gergnaz in the southeastern countryside of Idlib.

The Iranian Fars News Agency stated that the commander of Major General Mohammad Jaafar Hosseini, 35, died from an injury he suffered in Syria two years ago.

The agency did not explain where Hosseini was killed, nor did it identify any faction he was fighting, but indicated that he had joined the fighting in Syria alongside Iranians before the formation of the "Fatimiyoun" brigade.

Hosseini joined the brigade since its formation, and played a role in training Afghan immigrants in Iran, according to the previous source.

In January 2019, the US Department of the Treasury announced the inclusion of the "Fatimiyoun" and "Zainabiyoun" brigades on the US sanctions list.

The "Fatimiyoun" brigade consists of Afghan immigrants, and the "Zaynabiyoun" brigade of Pakistani militias, who sought refuge in Iran, were recruited by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and thrown into the forefront of the clashes in Syria, alongside the Syrian regime forces.

Several hundred members of the "Fatimiyoun" brigade - including children as young as 14 years old - were fighting in Syria, according to the US Treasury.

Gergnaz's battles
On the field level, the Syrian opposition factions managed to enter the town of Gergnaz, in the southeastern countryside of Idlib, on Saturday, after violent battles with the regime forces.

A military commander in the "National Liberation Front" affiliated with the opposition Free Syrian Army said that the opposition factions launched a wide attack on the regime forces' points in the villages of Idlib, southeastern countryside.

He added that the opposition forces had become on the outskirts of the town of Gergnaz after targeting government forces with a missile, "Berkan", which carries about 500 kg of explosives, during which dozens of regime forces were killed, including the commander of the Gergnaz Operations Room, Brigadier General Haitham Khaddour.

"After the missile attack on the positions of the government forces in the town of Gergnaz, the Syrian army escaped from the town that the opposition fighters entered from the northwestern axis, amid the rapid progress of the faction fighters," the military commander, who requested anonymity, told German news agency.

He added that "the opposition factions also recovered nine important sites on the front of the town of El-Tah, and destroyed a tank and a truck carrying soldiers."

On the other hand, the same agency quoted a source close to the regime forces as saying that "the Syrian army's artillery destroyed several sites of the Al-Nusra Front in the villages of Sifouhan and Kafr Awaid in the southern Idlib countryside, and the army also destroyed two locations of the opposition factions on the outskirts of the city of Maarat al-Numan in the southeastern Idlib countryside."

The source pointed out that the Syrian army responded to an attack by the opposition factions on the Jarjanaz-Altah axis, and detonated two booby traps for them before they reached the military points.
