On leaving the court, faces were closed. For the fourth time, supporters of Osman Kavala had made the trip to hear the same sentence. At the end of an express hearing, the Turkish businessman was condemned this December 24 to remain behind bars. He has been imprisoned for more than two years now .

" There is no more justice here "

But this time, the decision of the European Court of Human Rights had given even more hope. A month ago, the latter considered that the detention of the Turkish businessman was unfounded.

Emma Sinclair-Webb of the Human Rights Watch association remains stunned by the verdict. " The European Court also says that this decision is motivated only by political considerations, " she said. But the fact that Turkey completely ignores it really shows that there is no more justice here . ”

As in every trial, the Europeans had made the trip in numbers and the corridors of this disproportionate court, built within the prison of Silivri, in the suburbs of Istanbul, resounded in several languages.

Sergey Lagodinsky, MEP, made the trip specifically from Germany. " Several European countries have come, members of the European Parliament have come, whatever the conditions," he explains. It was important to send a message and this message is very clear : Turkey belongs to Europe. Turkey shares European values as well as the rule of European law. We owe this to Turkish society. And unfortunately, it hasn't been implemented today. "

The hearing, scheduled to last two days, did not last longer than a few hours. Before returning to his cell, solidly supervised by the police, Osman Kavala was applauded at length.
