According to him, the humanitarian situation in the northwest and northeast of Syria is "terrifying." He noted that the situation could have been “significantly worse without a UN cross-border program” that would help millions of people.

Dujarric added that the UN has no alternative means to help those in need.

“The UN program will be closed on January 10 if the Security Council does not give permission for its extension. We very much hope that a solution will be found in the coming days, ”TASS quoted him as saying.

Earlier, the UN Security Council voted against a draft resolution on humanitarian assistance to Syria proposed by Russia.

At the same time, Russia vetoed the resolution of Belgium, Germany and Kuwait on the extension of a year of cross-border humanitarian assistance to Syria.

Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya noted that the Russian draft resolution focuses solely on humanitarian aspects while reducing the checkpoints through which aid is delivered.
