21 December 201918.27 Violence in India does not subside and kills nine more in clashes between demonstrators and police in Northern India: the toll on protests against the new citizenship law rises to 23 deaths across the eastern country. The new law, according to demonstrators, discriminates against Muslims: it facilitates the granting of Indian nationality to immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan if Hindus, Sikhs, Jainists, Christians, Buddhists, Parsis, but no Muslims, thus violating the secularism of India sanctioned by the Constitution.
