Today, the Roads and Transport Authority is opening the sixth phase of the road network development project leading to the Expo 2020 exhibition, which includes the development of the intersection of Emirates Street and Expo Street.

The completion of the project comes in implementation of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to develop road projects and transportation systems related to meeting the requirements of the Emirate of Dubai hosting the Expo, to ensure the smooth flow of traffic that serves visitors to the exhibition and serve future projects in the region .

The Director General of the Board of Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, Mattar Al Tayer, confirmed that the road network development project leading to the Expo is considered one of the largest road projects that the authority is currently implementing, to meet the requirements of Dubai hosting the Expo 2020, and given its magnitude it has been divided into six Stages with an estimated total cost of three billion dirhams.

Al Tayer said, "The project included the implementation of bridges with a length of 1400 meters, and roads along eight kilometers, where the number of Expo Street paths will be increased from four tracks to six tracks in each direction along three kilometers, and Emirates Street will be developed along a length of five kilometers." During the project, the existing rotor on the intersection of Emirates Street with Expo Street was transformed into a bridge intersection that provides free traffic in all directions, by raising the Expo Street with a bridge with a capacity of four tracks in each direction, and the implementation of service roads on both sides with a capacity of two paths each, with Provide turning movements and connections that secure Sapeh movement of traffic from Emirates Road towards Abu Dhabi and vice versa, and Expo Road towards Sheikh Zayed Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, as well as to facilitate the coming of Jebel Ali traffic - Lehbab north to the Emirates Road towards Dubai, and Expo Street south to the Emirates Road towards Abu Dhabi.

He added that «during the project, the previous roundabout on the intersection of Emirates Street with Expo Street was converted to a bridge intersection that provides free traffic in all directions, which contributes to increasing the capacity of the street from 10 thousand vehicles per hour to 23 thousand and 700 vehicles per hour, and improves From traffic to the Expo and to the Dubai South area and Al Maktoum International Airport, in addition to reducing the travel time by removing the old rotor and the traffic signal, as well as increasing the traffic capacity to three times, with the presence of free traffic on the main roads.

The road project leading to the Expo site was divided into six phases, with an estimated cost of three billion dirhams. In addition to the sixth stage that opens today, and the third and fourth phases that were completed this year, work is going on in the first, second and fifth phases. The first and second phases include converting the roundabout at the intersection of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Street with Expo Street into a bridge intersection that provides free traffic in every direction, and the implementation of two bridges that form direct entry and exit to the Expo 2020 exhibition from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Street, to secure free movement to enter And exit to and from the exhibition site, and the total length of roads in the two phases is 43 km, while the fifth stage of the project includes the implementation of bridges with a length of 2.6 km, and roads with a length of three km, where the number of Expo Street paths increased from three to six tracks in each direction, with a length of three kilometers , While adding service methods to improve To put the current traffic routes, as it was raised Expo Street at its intersection with Asayil Street bridge length of 800 meters and a capacity of six lanes.
