The Duke of Edinburgh, Felipe, husband of Queen Elizabeth II of England, 98, has been hospitalized on Friday "as a precaution," the British royal house said in a statement.

The prince consort "traveled this morning from Norfolk to King Edward VII Hospital in London to remain under observation and undergo treatment in relation to a pre-existing problem," Buckingham Palace reported.

"Admission is a precautionary measure, on the advice of your Royal Highness doctor," the statement said.

Since 2009, Prince Felipe holds the absolute longevity record in the position of Prince Consort.

He retired from public activities in 2017 after having participated in more than 22,000 official acts.
