A session of the UN Security Council - which discussed the nuclear agreement between Iran and the major powers - witnessed a rare friendly talk between the American Ambassador to the United Nations and her Iranian counterpart.

Ambassador Kelly Kraft approached the Iranian ambassador, Majeed Takht Rawanji, and spoke to him, along with members of the Iranian delegation.

A source in the American mission said that the ambassador offered condolences to her Iranian counterpart in an Iranian baby. During his intervention, Rawanji said that she died last summer as a result of "bullous epidermolysis", and he blamed this on US sanctions.

In his speech to the council, Rawanji said, "It is a shame that the American bullying has stopped the export of certain medicines to Iran, which has caused a nightmare for some patients."

He added that the Iranian girl, who is called Ava, was unable to get the treatment she needed.

"The United States is ready to enter into a dialogue with Iran to negotiate an agreement that will better enhance international peace and security, but we will not stand idle and Iran continues to destabilize the region," Kraft told the Security Council.

After US President Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal, his government reimposed sanctions on Tehran with the aim of halting oil sales, the main source of Islamic Republic revenue.

As part of its campaign to exert "maximum pressure" on Iran, Washington also imposed sanctions on scores of Iranian entities, companies and individuals in an attempt to cut off sources of revenue for Iran, in a move that some analysts indicated may have forced the Islamic Republic to act more aggressively.
