Senegal now has its own wind energy. The Taïba Ndiaye wind farm, a hundred kilometers north of Dakar, has just been connected to the network via the national company Sénélec. It is the first industrial scale wind energy project in Senegal.

The Atlantic wind blows on the turbines 117 meters high, 16 wind turbines imported from Denmark entered into service in the Taïba Ndiaye wind farm. There should be a total of 46 in June 2020.

Today is 40 megawatts but ultimately 150 megawatts. We are talking about 15% of the network capacity, "says Yassine Majdallah, director of the power plant built by the British company Lekela.

The project is part of the government's “Emerging Senegal” Plan, which wants to diversify its energy mix. The total cost of the installation is more than 340 million euros. Yassine Majdallah follows the production live on his computer.

" Fossil energy in Senegal is more expensive than renewable energy at the moment," he explains. It even takes longer to develop for the simple reason that it calls for international funding. It's a new context and it took time. "

It took more than 10 years of development before launching the site. On the site, there were then fields and it was necessary to compensate the farmers.

In the midst of a debate on the price of electricity in Senegal, the promoters of the power station assure that more than two million inhabitants will be able to benefit from this energy created by the wind, if the electrical infrastructure of Sénélec can adapt.
