The vote in the House of Representatives took place in the evening and as planned Donald Trump was charged with abuse of power and obstruction in Congress. He is the third President in the history of the United States to be charged.

With our correspondent in Washington, Anne Corpet

The House of Representatives debated for six hours the two articles of the indictment of the American president: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Before finally rendering his verdict which was beyond doubt, the Democrats being the majority in the House.

When Nancy Pelosi solemnly opened the debate, she spoke of the threat that Donald Trump poses to democracy. The leader of the Democratic majority in the House said she was saddened. "It is tragic that the actions of the president make this procedure necessary," she said. The sadness of this day is indeed the only consensus around which Republicans and Democrats are gathered.

The Republicans fiercely denounce a flawed procedure, a hoax as the president says, the Democrats them, more often mention the background. He constantly encouraged foreign actors to interfere in our elections. He twisted his nose at the powers of Congress. Enough is enough ! "Said George Butterfield, an elected official from North Carolina.

After a few angry tweets posted before the vote, the president left Washington without a word for the press. He reserved his first comments for his supporters whom he joined for a meeting in Michigan.
