The picture was taken on December 13 and is on the state's own website kremlin.ru. According to, among others, The Guardian, the image shows a computer screen where it is clear that Windows XP is used - a system that is almost 20 years old, which cannot be updated and that Microsoft itself believes has security flaws.

But Joakim von Braun, an IT security expert who is currently writing a book on Russian disinformation, does not think the Russian government would use such unsafe IT systems. Instead, he thinks it is about disinformation.

- The Russians are building Russian computers, with Russian operating systems, Russian browsers and so on. And they are throwing everything foreign from the Russian administration and I don't think they want to show how far they have come, says Joakim von Braun.

"Arranged mirror image"

The Russian propaganda machine makes no mistake, says von Braun. Everything is carefully thought out.

- A large part of what we see in Russia is an orderly reflection of what they want us to see. Russia is a world champion on disinformation. They spend billions of dollars each year trying to fool us both about our own policies and what they think of us.
