A newborn abandoned in garbage in Greece was saved Wednesday thanks to the delay in their daily tour by the garbage collectors, according to local authorities.

"The baby was lucky in his misfortune," the mayor of the city of Kalamata (west), Thanassis Vassilopoulos, told Alpha TV on private television. "The day's tour to collect the garbage was late."

"Garbage trucks don't just pick up trash, they compress it," he said.

The little boy, just a few days old, had been put in a garbage bin several meters long in the city center, according to Alpha TV.

He was discovered by a woman who fed stray cats and heard him cry. The baby was taken to hospital with breathing difficulties, but doctors are confident he will fully recover, the chain said.
