18 December 2019 "The presence of Guterres testifies to the intensity of the bond that unites Italy to the UN, of which next year we will celebrate the 75th anniversary". Thus said Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte at a press conference at Villa Madama with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. "Italy firmly believes in effective multilateralism to face global challenges", added Conte, stressing that "we are firm supporters of the UN action with which we share values such as peace, security, fighting inequality, inclusion and equality of gender ".

"It is useless to point out that the role of the UN remains essential for us in order to promote shared political solutions, particularly for Libya, which is of particular concern to us", continued Conte, reiterating the "full support" for the special envoy Salamè and I hope that the Berlin conference can be held at the beginning of the new year and "can contribute to a political solution".

Conte therefore "confirmed our support for his very ambitious reform action, we support him" starting with the "climate change" issue: next year Italy will coordinate Cop26's work with Great Britain and we are committed to organizing a special event for young people ".

"It is essential that there is an immediate ceasefire in Libya and immediately afterwards a political process is started. As UN secretary general, I am very frustrated that some countries violate the current arms embargo," he stressed Guterres in his speech at the joint press conference with Conte.

Then on the climate he added: "We are all disappointed with the result of the Cop 25. In Madrid we lost a battle, but not the war. We remain strongly determined. I believe we could win the war" thanks to the contribution of Italy, which with the Great Britain will coordinate the next COP 26.
