It was on Tuesday that the US Congress voted to impose sanctions on companies working with the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2. Between 2017 and 2019, Karlshamn municipality allowed the storage of about 50,000 pipes in the harbor for the project, despite the Swedish government's recommendation.

Resistance from M

It was not only the government that was opposed. Karlshamn's opposition council Magnus Gärdebring (M) has also always been an opponent.

- Those who pushed in through the decision should think in through the consequences and they have taken on a lot of responsibility. The Nord Stream 2 project is wrong for Europe's security and energy policy and thus harmful for Sweden, he says.

"Reason for concern"

Now he is concerned about the consequences the US sanctions can have for Karlshamn.

- As long as you do not know what effects it will have, there is reason to be worried. It can be a problem if you have bad luck. But we hope that it will not have any effects, says Magnus Gärdebring.
