December 18, 2019The General Prosecutor's Office of Bolivia issued a warrant for the arrest of former president Evo Morales, who took refuge in Mexico and then in Argentina after being forced to resign from a popular uprising and pressure from the army and police following the outcome of elections deemed rigged.

Morales, re-elected for a fourth term in his disputed October 20 vote, is accused of sedition and terrorism.

Interior Minister Arturo Murillo recently accused Morales of promoting violent demonstrations in his support, resulting in the death of 35 people. He would have ordered his supporters to erect barricades in several cities to obtain the dismissal of the interim president, Jeanine Áñez, who took office after his resignation on November 10th.

In addition to Morales, arrest warrants were issued against Faustino Yucra Yarwi, an important exponent of the former Mas's Mas party, according to the newspaper El Deber.

After taking refuge in Mexico in November after escaping from the country, Morales arrived in Argentina last week, which granted him refugee status. "I am not afraid of being arrested," the former president said yesterday, arguing that there is no evidence to justify the trial against him.
