Although second hand trading is increasing, there is much that is competing with the market. It is mainly the new trade and the low-price chains that pose the biggest threat. It is a greater strain on the environment to buy new than to reuse what already exists - but if it is cheaper to buy new than to repair it can make it difficult to get people not to throw away.

- It is clear that low prices and second hand are competing with each other, says Emma Hernell, Deputy CEO of the Trade Investigation Institute (HUI).

The fashion chains also compete

Several of the major fashion chains, such as H&M, KappAhl and Lindex, today receive clothing for recycling. Online giant Zalando has opened a physical second hand shop in a mall in Berlin.

- The entire fashion retailer is changing and they are entering and competing with the second hand stores as well, says Emma Hernell.

From next year, the clothing chain MQ will also offer rental of clothing.
