Some 54,000 people, almost 60% of the population, were evacuated today from the city of Brindisi (south) to allow the deactivation of a British bomb dating from 1941, in what has been one of the largest evacuation operations in Italy since the end of World War II, according to Italian media.

The bomb had a weight of more than 200 kilograms and contained 40 kilos of explosives, and was found a month ago inside a cinema, during the expansion works of this space.

The evacuation of some 54,000 people began early this Sunday, who have had to leave their homes temporarily because they are close to the area of ​​the artifact.

The airport and the railway station were also closed, traffic on the roads was interrupted and two hospital centers and a prison had to be evacuated, whose 217 detainees were provisionally transferred to the Lecce prison, about 38 kilometers away from Brindisi.

More than 1,000 police officers and around 250 civil protection volunteers participated in the operation.

According to Italian media, the bomb was manufactured in England, is one meter long and was probably launched in 1941.
