Fredrik Olovsson (S), chairman of KFAB, says that the purpose of the amended rules, which Katrineholms-Kuriren was the first to report on, is to reduce segregation.

- We see that you risk getting into a situation where those who do not rent work, that there will be a culture where you do not support yourself, he says.

Eligible income is salary, pension, unemployment benefit, income from own company and study funding. As before, the renter must have an income equal to at least twice the rent.

Anyone who can't afford an apartment, should it apply to another municipality?

- Yes you can do that, or to another property owner, says Fredrik Olovsson and continues:

- If you can't afford a home, you can turn to the social services.

All homes are affected

Earlier this year in Eskilstuna, a decision was made to impose stricter income requirements for the municipal housing company's apartments in areas with higher unemployment. Katrineholm has not focused on specific areas, but the rules will apply to all apartments within the company.

According to Fredrik Olovsson, the pressure on housing in Katrineholm is great.

- The queue is quite long and there are not many empty apartments.

What do you hope the new rules will do to the effect?

- That we get more mixed areas where more people have jobs, answers Olovsson.
